Moss People 3

In Their Own World

Moss People Journal, entry 3

I had another Moss People experience the other day, my third sighting of these very strange beings. Since I last glimpsed one of the Moss People I have returned to the forest many times with the hope of seeing more of them. I thought much about them as I searched. Were they intending for me to see them, or had I somehow been fortunate enough to catch them unawares? The latter seemed unlikely, as I know of no other sightings of such beings. After several weeks and many fruitless forest searches over trail and through tangled underbrush my perseverance was rewarded.

I had spent the afternoon negotiating the trails and terrain of an unfamiliar coastal redwood forest, pausing for extended periods where I found moss growing on stem or stone. At such times I sat quietly, hoping that some of the Moss People would again show themselves. I had resolved to attempt communicating with them before photographing should I find any of them again; I did not want to waste my unique opportunity to learn the secrets of these incredible people. But the afternoon waned, and I had given up and was on the trail back to my car when I saw them.

They appeared in the mossy cross section of an ancient redwood giant where the tree had been cut away after falling across the trail many years ago. I stopped short when I saw them. There were two Moss People, one seemingly peering out from a glass-like portal embedded in the tree, while the other one was situated in the knot of a more recently-fallen log and looked as though it were a part of the tree itself. I cannot describe it with words exactly.

As I had already photographed other Moss People, my first intention was to initiate communication. I raised my hands palm up and approached them slowly while stating my peaceful intentions in soft tones. They paid not the slightest attention; I was utterly ignored. I did not want to force myself upon them, so after exhausting reasonable means of gaining their attention I eventually desisted and, with a mental shrug and sigh, decided I may as well photograph them. With the click of the shutter they instantly faded away, together with the glassy portal.

My photograph was again a success, but these strange beings remain a mystery. I feel that they have not entered my life by chance, and I believe I will see them again.

From the Artwaves introduction...

Dreamtime adventures, flights of fancy, travels in thought--the unseeing observer may have nothing to report from his or her experiences with these phenomena. Such things aren’t real and have no bearing on reality.

You and I both know there is more to them than that. A lot more. Just the other day I recalled a childhood dream that had frightened me as a little boy. In a flight of fancy, I opened Photoshop and painted the image I had seen in my dream. It was a human head and shoulders silhouetted against unbearable light that flew out in rays from behind the figure. I was glad to finally have an image after all these years that I could hold and think, “Yes, that’s what it looked like, all right.”

Then later, as I fiddled with another image, my thoughts traveled to the world’s international tensions and our place in it. A Flag with a big Eye started to emerge from the pixels. That big Eye in the Flag sort of makes one think… I decided I would stick into that Eye the scary figure from my childhood dream. They do say that all things are connected.

This is a collection of images I made along my journeys through thought and fancy, dreams and subconscious passages. Pictures I took out the window. Postcards from the imagination. A slide show of the mindscape.
