Eye of the Beholder

Eye of the Beholder

(Enemy Within)

In a hundred years, when art history students are racking their brains for an intelligent short answer response to the Final Exam question, "Slide 21: David Wilson's Eye of the Beholder. In the context of the American political pendulum's extreme swing toward cowboy diplomacy in the early Twenty-first Century, was this photographer expressing an opinion? Be specific," who may say but that the person who answers correctly writes something like this, "I think he was likely responding to all the flag waving of his time, but I don't think he was expressing a definite opinion so much as trying to create a compelling image that might mean different things to different people. Is that America's sinister eye watching everyone else in the world, or is that a reflection of the world's eye on the U.S.? The silhouette in the iris is a haunting reminder that it is not only the US that watches the world, but the viewer of the image him/herself who also watches the U.S. Or perhaps the silhouette is that of a Higher Power, one who also watches and judges. Or is it even an American flag at all?"

From the Artwaves introduction...

Dreamtime adventures, flights of fancy, travels in thought--the unseeing observer may have nothing to report from his or her experiences with these phenomena. Such things aren’t real and have no bearing on reality.

You and I both know there is more to them than that. A lot more. Just the other day I recalled a childhood dream that had frightened me as a little boy. In a flight of fancy, I opened Photoshop and painted the image I had seen in my dream. It was a human head and shoulders silhouetted against unbearable light that flew out in rays from behind the figure. I was glad to finally have an image after all these years that I could hold and think, “Yes, that’s what it looked like, all right.”

Then later, as I fiddled with another image, my thoughts traveled to the world’s international tensions and our place in it. A Flag with a big Eye started to emerge from the pixels. That big Eye in the Flag sort of makes one think… I decided I would stick into that Eye the scary figure from my childhood dream. They do say that all things are connected.

This is a collection of images I made along my journeys through thought and fancy, dreams and subconscious passages. Pictures I took out the window. Postcards from the imagination. A slide show of the mindscape.
